About Alpacas

What is an Alpaca?

Alpacas are a member of the camel, or camelid, family. They are a ruminant animal that chews a cud but has 3 stomachs rather than 4. They have no upper teeth and have soft, padded feet that make them easy on pastureland. Their small size, 36" at the withers and between 100-175 lbs and gentle disposition make them easily handled by their owners.

The alpaca industry in Florida is probably growing faster than that of any other state in the country. It is exciting to be a part of such rapid success.

HISTORY OF ALPACAS

There are 3 camilids native to South America; the llama, the alpaca, and the vicuna.  Archeological excavations suggest that these animals have been domesticated since 4,000-5,000 B.C.
