DUCKS

We have a 1/4 acre pond (fenced off) where we can catch and eat our own fish. We also have a couple of ducks that our neighbor gave us. They had a hatch of 12 ducks and they gave most of them away saying, "Everybody we gave a duck to gave them a name starting with the letter D." Since they gave us a male and female duck, I named them Dali, and Dolly. We got the ducks when they were small so I had to keep them in the coop until they got bigger because the turtles in the pond will eat a young duck. While the ducks were in the chicken coop, I had an idea. I had heard about weed eating geese that would eat the weeds out of your garden but not your vegetables. One farmer explained how he had a single type of weed he wanted his geese to eat. He cultivated this weed and fed it to baby geese and when they grew up they ate that particular weed for him. I have a grass around my pond that grows both on the shore and in the water. As it grows in the water it takes oxygen away from the fish. I did not have to cultivate this grass because I could just go and grab handfuls of it and it was tender. The little ducks ate it up. When they were big enough to fend off the turtles, I put them in the pond and they ate the grass above and below the water. They really made an improvement there. Sometimes if you just take a good look at something you can find a win-win situation.
